Hematopathology Fellowship

We are now accepting fellowship applications for 2026-2027.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM)/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) offers a one-year ACGME-approved Hematopathology Fellowship under the directorship of Julia Geyer, M.D.. A second year may be available to qualified fellows who are interested in devoting the majority of the additional year to research. The Hematopathology Laboratory evaluates several thousand specimens annually, including approximately 2000 bone marrow biopsies, 1600 lymph node and extra-nodal tissues, 7000 flow cytometry studies, and 400 cases in consultation or for secondary review. The fellowship training has prepared former fellows for successful careers in academia, private practice, and industry. During their training, fellows are responsible for the clinical diagnostic service of the Hematopathology Laboratory, where they learn an integrated morphologic, immunologic, and molecular diagnostic approach to the evaluation and classification of hematopoietic neoplasms. Fellows have ample exposure to, and thus the opportunity to master, data generation and analysis associated with a variety of ancillary techniques, including immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cytogenetic analysis, and molecular diagnostics.

Requirements

Candidates must have completed a four-year Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) residency or three years of a straight Anatomic Pathology residency (AP-only).

NYP/WCM only accepts J1 visas for all fellowships.

Types and Numbers of Appointments

Two positions are available each academic year.

Facilities

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) is the major clinical affiliate and teaching hospital of Weill Cornell Medicine. NYP/WCM, an 824-bed facility, is centrally located in a collaborative medical community that includes the Hospital for Special Surgery, Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and The Rockefeller University. Fellows have a dedicated desk and microscope and perform all activities at our primary WCM/NYP site; fellows are not required to commute to any other affiliated hospitals within the NYP Network. The hematology, flow cytometry, and molecular diagnostic laboratories are located on the same floor, or on nearby floors, within the same building.

Community

Weill Cornell Medicine is located in a beautiful residential neighborhood along the East River in Manhattan, within walking distance of Central Park and the midtown entertainment and shopping areas. Attractions include major museums, concert halls, theaters, and an opera house, all of which are easily accessible.
