Cytogenetics

The Cytogenetics Laboratory at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine is an actively expanding diagnostic laboratory that processes about 4,500 samples / 10,500 tests annually, including cancer specimens and prenatal and postnatal samples. The laboratory performs conventional cytogenetic analysis and Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (FISH) assays. It is in the process of expanding and introducing chromosomal microarray and other cytogenomic testing platforms.

We offer conventional cytogenetics/molecular cytogenetic services for the following types of samples:

  • Bone marrow/oncology blood
  • Lymphoid tissues
  • Solid tumors

  • Peripheral blood
  • Products of conception

  • Tissue biopsy

We offer the following tests:

  • Conventional karyotyping for chromosome abnormalities in constitutional conditions and neoplasms
  • FISH assays for microdeletion and duplication syndromes
  • FISH assays for detecting translocations, deletions, and duplications in bone marrow aspirates/paraffin sections from patients with hematologic neoplasm
  • HER2/neu FISH test on paraffin sections from patients with breast cancer
  • FISH assays on paraffin sections from patients with brain tumor
  • ALK FISH test on paraffin sections from patients with non-small cell lung cancer
